What do you think of your training experience?
Elena Ruttan talks about her path to partnership here at MNP.
“MNP was my first accounting job ever. During my second year of undergrad studies, I did not participate in recruitment, so I didn’t have the opportunity to apply for an internship. As a result, I had no idea what to expect on my first day of work. It was a complete mystery to me and I was absolutely excited about it.
I started the same day as three other guys: Andrei (a junior just like me), Steve (a senior designated professional) and Julio (a manager). We spent the entire week together and as a result, became very good friends. The first week at MNP is the same for everyone, no matter what level you start at: you spend your entire week in training. To make a long story short, I will say that the training mainly consists of a review of school material and an in-depth tutorial of MNP’s methodology and lectures so you get to know MNP’s culture and history.
I realized something very important during that first week: although MNP likes to describe itself as a medium-sized firm, it actually possesses the support structure of a large firm. For instance, MNP has developed a yearly national learning program that every employee needs to go through in order to ensure their knowledge is up-to-date. The firm has a unique platform called MNP University where you can register for any course you might want to take to learn more and improve your skills. From my perspective, MNP offers a good balance between both worlds. On the one hand, you get a very intimate and friendly training environment which means you get the opportunity to ask any questions you might have without feeling bad about it. On the other hand, you have access to a very well-organized and large learning platform that is available to feed your desire to learn more about the profession.”
“When I got my offer from MNP after a month of the recruiting process I was very excited that I was going to begin a new journey outside of school. As my start date got closer, I started to get worried because unlike a lot of people (or so I thought) I did not have prior accounting experience working with clients at a firm. My accounting experience came from working for the Calgary Airport Authority doing A/R, A/P, reconciliations and other specialized projects. I was also nervous because I wasn’t familiar with the software MNP uses.
In my first week, I was in training, opened Caseware (the program used to prepare financials and working papers) and felt really overwhelmed. Thankfully, that didn’t last long! The partners and managers who provided the training made it easy to learn the firm’s standards and programs. All of the training offered to articling students is the same across the firm. Each class is taught by a partner, senior manager or manager within MNP and sessions are supported with ample reference materials. The training is excellent because it focuses not only on teaching us how to do good work but encourages personal growth and development, stressing important skills such as leadership. Also, training doesn’t stop once the session is done. The partners and senior managers have an open door policy, so it is easy to pop by their office and ask for help. It’s amazing to work for a firm where I can gain knowledge from both managers and partners.”
